Though Sardar Ballabhbhai Patel would have been a better person for the post. Do you know it was him that united different smaller provinces and kingdoms to give shape to India as we see it today. Most of the leaders of Congress wanted Patel to be PM but patel had to step back because Gandhi desired so. He wanted his protege Nehru to be PM and that's it.

He served at the post till 27 May 1964 when he died in office, making him the longest serving Prime Minister of the country
