In the course of studying law the general principles of Criminal Law are very crucial. The Criminal Law has been known to protect the victims against perpetrators of different criminal activities and hence until and unless one is sure of the general principles it is very hard to understand the different ways in which these principles can be used in different legal cases. Some of the topics taught in this paper are how and why an accused cannot be a witness in defence of himself, insanity as a defence in comparison with English Law, various provisions in IPC which deal with inchoate crimes in the light of decided cases and illustrations, cases which are outside the rule of ‘mens rea’, various provisions in the IPC which deal with the principle of joint liability, difference between intention and recklessness, the scope of vicarious liability under the Indian Law, differences between attempt and preparation.
