The Operating Systems paper is a sub-part of Computer Applications, the outline of which is construed by the dominating areas of computer studies and operating systems is the supporting base without which the computer is entirely meaningless and worthless. The topics are thus intrusive into those areas that will provide an overview of the operating systems. It has the characteristics and functions as every operating system has its unique set of functionalities, hardware working that has a link with microprogramming and operating system, process operations, process states, process context, concurrent processes, process synchronization, inter-process communication and process control block. It also has operating system organization alongside UNIX process and its management, concept of semaphores and its use, critical regions, deadlocks, memory configuration, storage allocation, virtual mapping, virtual storage and paging and segmentation. The entire field of file organization including file structures, directory tree, blocks and file descriptors is covered within this syllabus.
