"Punishment in Kindergarten" is a poem by Kamala Das, which highlights the rigidity of the Indian education system and its effects on young children. The poem is not meant for Kindergarten students, but rather for a mature audience.

The poem tells us that the education system in India is very strict, and children are often punished harshly for small mistakes. The punishment makes the child feel ashamed and afraid, but it does not help them learn from their mistakes.

To write a summary of the poem, you can highlight the following key points:
  • The poem is about a little boy who is punished for doing something wrong in school.
  • The teacher makes him stand in the sun and write "I will not" repeatedly.
  • The child is more concerned about the ants crawling over his feet and the heat from the sun than his punishment.
  • The poem criticizes the strictness of the education system in India, and how children are often punished harshly for small mistakes.
  • The punishment makes the child feel ashamed and afraid, but it does not help them learn from their mistakes.

The poem has been divided into three parts. In the first part, the poet discusses how her teacher scolded her.
In the second part, she memorizes her schoolmates laughing her making her weep and in the final part she says that being an adult there is no need for her to memorize this experience.
