Hydrology is an essential discipline of study which involves all aspects related to water. The field studies the problems concerned with searching and maintaining sufficient supply of water for the society. Hydrologists are the trained experts who study the aspects of water, analyze the resources and the hydrologic cycle. They analyze the physical features, movement, quantity and distribution of all sorts of bodies of water. They frequently evaluate the water systems over time and track alterations.

These experts also study the role of water in many different ecosystems and recognize the pollutants by conducting various tests. From several experiments conducted on samples of water, they collect the information on the effects of human activity on water resources. Most of the hydrologists are engaged in the research activities to build up the water preservation and improvement methods. Hydrologists may use a range of complex equipments and techniques like numerical modeling, data assimilation, etc.

Qualifying Exam

Those individuals who are interested in this field usually need at least a postgraduate degree in hydrology for the entry. A doctorate degree is must for the research or teaching professions. The doctorate degree in this field will help them to gain a lucrative career in hydrology field. Some employers will also recruit candidates with bachelor’s degree in hydrologic science for certain entry level jobs. Many of the universities and colleges in India offer this peculiar branch of study for the aspiring students.

Who is eligible to apply?

The students who have completed their senior school education with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and passed the related examination of a recognized examination board can apply for the undergraduate degree programme in hydrologic sciences. After pursuing this graduate degree they can apply for the master’s degree in hydrology in any university that offers it. Candidates can apply for the concerned jobs with this qualification. A research level or teaching profession will require at least a doctorate degree in this area.

  • Study 10+2 or equivalent with PCM and possess a pass in the concerned examination of a recognized board.
  • Join for the bachelor’s degree course in hydrologic sciences in a reputed university.
  • Pursue the master’s degree in hydrology and apply for the related jobs as Hydrologist.

Otherwise complete the doctorate degree to get into high position jobs.

Skills required for a Hydrologist

A career in hydrology field is most suitable for the individuals who have the keen interest to study and research about different water systems. Hydrologists need certain qualities and skills to perform in this area. They must have an in-depth knowledge about the properties of water and should have the skill to apply them in various tasks. Other qualities required are good communication and interpersonal skills.  They should also be a good team player.
