The institute is among the well established hotel management institutes of India and was started in the year of 1973 as a popular Food Craft Institute with only three trades. The state government of Orissa added a diploma course and was renamed as State Institute of Hotel Management in 1981. The institute was further enhanced and got the full fledged status by government of India in 1984. The institute is affiliated to National Council for Hotel Management and offers various diploma, certificate and bachelor courses to the applicants.

The applicants have to collect an application form in order to appear for the NCHMJEE exam. 10+2 or its equivalent exams pass out candidates are eligible for these bachelor courses.
