In India there is a general boom in the technical education field. As of now the number of engineering colleges in India particularly in South is increasing on a higher scale. On a normal basis one can observe that the students who are aiming for Higher education after the intermediate level cannot think beyond engineering or medicine. The point of view of students is always inclined towards the technical side even when there are ample opportunities available in the government sector as well as the other education areas.

At such a point of time the question that arises may be why or what are the main reasons for such a thinking need to be clearly answered.

Until 2010, the number of engineering colleges in India which are AICTE approved stands at a high figure of 2388 with the student intake of around 8.2 lakh students.

In case all these applications were considered there would have been a need for more colleges to be approved in south India as of 40 %. The government of India has been spending a considerable amount in case of higher education in the country. This can be prominent in the case of engineering colleges both government colleges as well as private sector colleges which are being given approval .The engineering in private sectors those who are willing to start even they are looking out for the most apt opportunities. The government in a way has identified the increasing potential of this industry and has started giving adequate back up. The government providing in more resources with additional support in all areas will enable in providing better services in terms of engineering education.

Education industry – Market driven

The education in today’s time can be considered as major industry. The people who are involved in this sector are carefully observing the general trends and planning their strategies accordingly. As it is a fact the more number of engineering colleges are in south when compared to the North side .But one cannot attribute to one aspect alone. A significant factor being the number of private organizations supporting institutions are dominating in this sector which provides world class training and quality education to the students. This has led to the world class infrastructure facilities in these institutions. In south India we can analyze the existence of a large number of institutes. The existence of these large numbers of institutes providing high quality education will always compete within themselves with regard to the education level in general.

The general structure in engineering education sector being that the people are converting or viewing this as a business which is not at all a healthy strategy for the education sector itself. But another side of the problem being that with the increase in engineering colleges will always tend to overproduce engineers in the country too.

Another major factor is in respect to the economic and industrial development in the country. The growth in the IT sector has led to more people opting engineering as well as producing quality engineers. This is interrelated as in we are creating in more talent the companies are also supporting these talents by providing them ample scope in the organization as well. It’s like a chain function.

Students and parents calculate like if they apply to a certain college having good academic records and industry holding, they can have or get in to a campus placement for sure. Campus placement is the main factor which brings back or enables more students to apply to a particular college.

General Scenario

Every student who has been aspiring to build up his/her career either in engineering or medicine field. The engineering sector is very much deep rooted in our society. In many cases the children have no freedom tochoose what they really wanted to do. Now the present situation is like that parents are hesitant to share to the general public that their children are not pursuing a pure science course after the intermediate. If so there is a general perception that the parents will not have the image of a good parent at all.

Another aspect being if the parents does not pressurize their children in pursuing these technical courses the society will always write him off.  There is a high chance in getting employed after engineering is directly linked with the number or the type of college selects.

Though this pressurizing aspect in children from the parents is always not good but on the other hand it surely help in better academics and make the students aware about the importance of  good education as well as strong decision making skills.
