Sarguja University was formed in the year 2008 and it was incorporated by Chhattisgarh Vishwavidyalaya Adhiniyam. The jurisdiction of the university is spread over the whole region of Sarguja, which comprises of the revenue districts of Jaspur and Sarguja. The Guru Ghasidas University with the permission from Higher Education Department of the State of Chhattisgarh started Sarguja University in a small campus.

Initially, the university started to function with just two diploma courses being PG diploma in Computer Application and Diploma in Pharmacy with a student strength of 30 per course. However, at present the university is offering a number of courses. Later, A land spread over 220 acres was allocated by the state government for the construction of campus for this university at a place called as Sarguja, which is located 10 km from the town of Ambikapur.  The district-wise list of colleges affiliated to Sarguja University is as follows:

Sarguja University is located in an economically and socially challenged and tribally enriched area of Chhattisgarh State and the university is partially acting as a residential university. The university is offering courses under different areas of life and social science, management, law, education, commerce, science, arts, etc… through its affiliated colleges.

The district of Sarguja, wherein this university is located, is a fast growing industrial area with a large number of industrial units. The university includes two main teaching departments namely pharmacy department and computer science department. Both these departments were started very recently in the year 2005. The main aim of the pharmacy department of the university is to prepare professionally competent human resources for the pharmaceutical field.
