The requirement of a separate medical university in the state of Tamil Nadu to deal particularly with medical research and education at the doctoral, post-graduation and under graduation level was a long felt dream of the state government.

A High-level committee was set up by the state government to go into all the details pertaining to formation of a separate medical university and to provide recommendations to the government on the same. On the basis of the recommendation of this committee, the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University was formed in the year 1987 on the 24th of September under the Tamil Nadu medical university Act 1987.

The university started its functions from the month of July 1988 and it is one of the premier institutions in the state of Tamil Nadu named in honor of the former Chief Minister of the state. The category-wise list of colleges affiliated to the university is given below:

The main aim of Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University is to achieve and maintain uniformly high standards of medical education in the state of Tamil Nadu. The university also aims at creating workforce for health sector, who will be endowed with a sense of spirit of enquiry and dedication.

It is the only medical university in Tamil Nadu with the capability of granting affiliation to new paramedical and medical colleges, both self-financing or government colleges and awarding degrees. The university is located in the southern part of the city of Chennai at about 6 km from the International Airport at Chennai.
