When a plant came out from its seed, it is exposed to the light. Then it gets routed in the ground and begins to grow adapting its external environment. If it fails to adapt to the environment, the root of the plant can’t run deep into the ground and if it doesn’t possess a deep base it will fall down. This is the same case with the human being. We all are like the same seed and if we failed to acclimatize with the changing environment there will be no one to blame off. Only the knowledge can make the man flexible and adaptive with the nature. This is a reason why the tree is considered as the symbol of learning. In our culture especially the banyan tree is receiving special status of knowledge and stands for growth power, consistency and renewal.The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, CSIR can be considered as a pioneer banyan tree in the scientific knowledge and research sector in our nation. The Council promotes the scientific research in various areas and covers almost every domain of scientific knowledge. The mission and vision of CSIR stands for carry out the R&D in various scientific areas effectively which in-turn helps the people of the country and thus maximize the output for the benefit of the nation.

CSIR- Council of Scientific and Industrial Research

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, an independent body under the Central Government division of Scientific and Industrial Research, is established in 1942. The council provides opportunity to the young talent to come forward for the research work and they have an exceptional group of experts from various background which works together for the common aim. The CSIR are well known for its research in the areas of aerospace, food processing, earth science and ecology, IT etc. They also conduct study in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, chemicals and compounds etc. The council owns many patents for its research works and for the innovations.

Many of the research aspirants are keen about the opportunity to work with the CSIR. The Council offer different plans for the research work of the aspirants. One can take according to the interest of their studies. The research works are offered to the researcher of age 15 to that of 65. They motivate the young researcher with honors and awards for their achievements. Some of such plans are briefed below.

Youth for Leadership in Science

Around fifty young talents from the various streams of class tenth were selected for this program last year. It includes the students from the state as well as the central board. The tenth passed students can apply for this program when the notification is issued. The selected students will provide all the facilities to conduct their research in ICSR lab and also get a small amount as allowance.

Diamond Jubilee Research Interns Awards

This plan is offered to the graduates in the engineering background and also to the B. Pharm and MBBS holders. The post graduates in the science stream are also eligible for this program. The research period under this program is limited to two years and the age criteria are set to be 25. The researcher under this scheme will get a stipend of Rs.15, 000/month.

Junior Research Fellowship (JRF- NET)

The aspirants of research having 55% of marks in the post graduate in science can apply for this program. The admission is opened twice in a year, on Feb and Aug. The time period of this program is five year and they candidates are offered to Rs.16,000/month along with the annual scholarship of Rs.20,000. For the engineering graduates there is the JRF-GATE which has the same offering as that of NET. On the basis of the NET or GATE score the council also provide Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee (SPMF) Fellowship in which the students offered little higher stipend than that of the JRF program. It will be Rs.24, 000/month with annual grant Rs.70, 000.

Senior Research Associateship

The research aspirants with the post graduation in various streams of Engineering, Medicine and other science can apply for the Senior Research Associateship program. But the applicant must have some research or teaching experience. The age limit is set to be 40 years and the amount varies between Rs.21, 000-25,000. The research tenure is three years.

Technology led entrepreneurship programme to research scholars (TEP)

Only the researcher with minimum 2 years of experience in the ICSR is eligible for this program There will be a core committee for the selection of the candidates and the research tenure is 20-30 days.

Nehru science postdoctoral research fellowship Scheme

The PhD candidates are eligible to apply for the scheme. The aspirant who are already submitted or going to submit the thesis paper can apply. The age criterion is 32 years and they must have to apply within three years of honor of PhD. The students are offered to the monthly stipend Rs.35, 000 and the annual grant Rs.3lakhs. Three years are allotted as the research tenure.

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (SSB)

Any Indian national with sound track record in research field or for the exceptional achievement in the related field are chosen for the SSB prize. The age limit is set as 45 years and can apply once in a year. The prize includes the citation and plaque with the amount Rs.5 lakhs. It also offers a book assistance of Rs.10, 000/year with special reward of Rs.15, 000/month till superannuation.

Young Scientist Award (YSA)

This program is only for the scientist in CSIR. The age limit is 35 years and it comprises the citation and plaque with prize money Rs.50,000. The researcher also gets Rs.25lakhs over the five years of his/her study. They are also avail to the special allowance of Rs.7, 500/month till the age of 45.

Concluding..

These are some important initiatives from the council. There are some other plans like Funding of sponsored research schemes, Emeritus Scientist, Research Associateship, Senior Research Fellowship, Visiting Associateship etc. Each program has its own demands and the candidate must meet those requirements. The ICSR stands for quality in research and therefore the council is keen about these requirements. Only the deep aspirants and talented people can work with ICSR. The council is enjoying the high status in the research filed so as the researcher in ICSR also getting the benefits of working with the firm.

Research and Development is an important concern of our country because of its contribution in development. The Government also funding so high in the sector and more and more youth are coming with their research works. ICSR is acting as a stepping stone for the research aspirants and it is standing as a huge banyan tree that support the nations demand on the scientific works and research…
