You just can't compare exams from different field each has been designed to check candidates ability.
However competition is tough in Administrative exam of IAS ,Among technical IITs are toughest and for management CAT exam

so its hard to select one.

AIIMS is tougher than cat and iit because there are only 30 seats for general and around 2 lakhs give this examination and the course is so vast and so difficult that on genius can crack it and remember science is much tougher than commerce and arts or history . even aipmt is tougher than iit since :

total candidates in IIT are around 20,00000 and seats are around 15,000 therefore ratio will be 20,00000/15,000 = 133.33
but in aipmt:
total candidates are 4,00000 and seats are 1800 therefore ratio will be 4,00000/1,800
=222.22

so there are around 222 students fighting for one seats in aipmt but there are only 133 students fighting for one seats in iit ,that is why aipmt and aiims are much tougher than iit and cat

CAT Exam

CAT Exam's syllabus is just Maths and English upto the level of 10th standard. However many finds this exam to be tough as it tests the reasoning power,speed and accuracy of a candidate. To clear this exam one needs to have a natural aptidue of Maths.

Questions of CAT Exam are bit tricky which can get anyone wrong even with a thorough preparation. To crack this exam one needs to do a lot of practice of English Grammar, Quantitative Aptitude and Data Intepretation. Besides this the candidate should have a good verbal reasoning and vocabulory.

It takes around 1-1.5 years of preparation to clear this exam. One needs to do a lot of practice of the above mentioned topics. As this tests the spped and accuracy, one needs to practice a lot.

From a competition prespective, this exam expects a high cut off of around 99.7+ percentile, if the application rating is low. If the application rating is high, then the cut off drops to around 99. In the later case the candidate is expected to have an excellent academic carrer, good work experience, good communication skills and management skills which are tested through an interview.

Thus I would conclude that this exam is easy if one has natural aptitude of maths and does a lot of practice of English and maths.

In my earlier post i discussed about CAT Exam , in this post i will be discussing about GATE exam.

GATE Exam

GATE Exam is bit tough to clear for CS,EC,EE,IN and ME streams especially if you are seeking admission for IITs/IISc.

The syllabus of GATE spans almost 20- 25 engineering degree papers, 5 maths papers (degree level), Quantitative aptitude, Data interpretation, English Grammar and Vocabulory. A candidate with a good knowledge of the engineering basic of the relevant stream with a good aptitude in maths might require a preparation of about 1-1.5 years.

GATE basically tests the understanding skills, reasoning, speed and accuracy. One needs to spend time for understanding the basic engineering concepts of the relavant stream to clear this exam.

The IIT Cutoff for PG admission varies from stream to stream. For getting a good specialisation in IIT/IISc one needs to have a cut off of around 99.80+ Percentile.

Thus I would conclude that this exam is easy if one understands the basic engg concepts and solves the problems of Engg and Maths.

IITJEE and AIEEE.

IITJEE and AIEEE are engg entrance exams at national level. These exams are considered one of the toughest exams in India. The Syllabus of the exam contains Maths, Physics and Chemistry at CBSE 12th LEVEL. A candidate with a good basic knowledge of Science(Physics,chemistry) and with excellent mathematical skills can easily crack this exam with a preparation of about 1.5-2 years.

From a competition prespective

In 2010 around 4.85 lakhs students appeared for IITJEE for approx 10,000 seats and more than 9.6 lakhs appeared for AIEEE for approx 20,000 seats.

In my previous post i have discussed about some of the tough exams of India like GATE, CAT, IITJEE and AIEEE. These are the tough exams in Engg Stream and Management field. Apart from that UGC-NET and AIIMS Entrance Exam(both UG and PG) are some of the tough exams in Arts and Medical field.

Above all the most toughest exam in India which I feel is the Civil Service Exam conducted by UPSC, especially if you are targeting IAS. I will discuss about Civil Service Exam in my next Post.

In this I will be discussing about Civil Service Exam conducted by UPSC which is the most toughest exam in India. Civil Service Exam is conducted in 3 stages namely
Prelims, Mains and Interview.

From a competition Prespective, in 2010

Candidates appeared in Prelims : 2.69 lakhs
Candidates recommended for Mains : 12491
Candidates recommended for Interview: 2589
Number of Selected Candidates in CSE : 920

The Exam Pattern

Prelims

Prelims consists of two papers General studies and Aptitude Test

General Studies(Paper 1) :

History, Geography, Indian Economy, Indian Polity, Science(Basic), Environment Science, Current Events, General Knowledge and other Social Topics.

This paper requires a thorough understanding of our Country in all aspects, Basic Science, a good knowledge of current events.

Aptitude Test (Paper 2)

English Grammar, Vocabulory and Comprehension.
Data Interpretation, Quantitative Aptitude
Maths - Algebra, Geometry and Probability
Logical Reasoning, Decision Making
Mental Ability- Verbal and non verbal Reasoning


This paper tests the basic mathematical skills and communication skills of a candidate.


The candidates who qualify the Prelims are recommended for Main examination

Main Examination

Indian Language

Short Essay, Precis writing, Comprehension, Translation, Grammar and Vocabulory.

English

Short Essay, Precis writing, Comprehension, Grammar and Vocabulory.

The Main Papers(considered for ranking) will be evaluated only of candidates who obtain the minimum qualifying marks in Indian Language and English.

Papers considered for Ranking

Essay: 200 marks

Candidates are required to write an essay from a list of topic specified. Credits will be given for Presentation, content and Vocabulory. Candidates with good knowledge in Sociology can present the essay has an advantage in this paper.

General Studies Paper-1 : 300 Marks

Indian History, Geography of India, Indian Polity, Indian Economy, Sociology, General Knowledge and Current Events.

Ncert books are other conventional text books helps to get a deep understanding of the above mentioned topics.

General Studies Paper -2: 300 Marks

India and the World, India 's economic interaction with world, international Organisations
Science and Technology and Data Intepretation.

Reading Conventional Text books and a good Newspaper can fetch a lot of marks in this paper.

Optional Papers :

2 Optionals needs to be taken. Each Optional has two papers of each 300 marks.
Hence a total of 1200 Marks. Candidates needs to have a deep understanding of the subject. Each Optional contains around 20 degree level papers at honours level.

The candidates who qualify the Mains are recommended for Interview

Interview 300 Marks

Intellectual qualities, social traits and interest in current affairs are assesed in this phase. Some of the qualities to be judged are mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgement, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, intellectual and moral integrity.

Thus this exam tests all the qualities of a person.

IIT- JEE, the quality of questions are too good for the teacher to solve, but IAS had less seats.

dude, 99.7% is percentile! it is natural if so many are aspiring for an exam!
i bet percentile for IAS exams is still more... IITJEE also have percentile around 99% itself.

IAS is not a separate exam!!!!civil service is the exam

in my opinion IIT-JEE is the toughest competative examination in india in engineering field,in civil services IAS examination is the toughest examination,,,,,,,,world's most difficult examination is the examination of NASA if you work hard then only u can clear it.....

The reason being it cant be cleared by cramming
You have to apply your mind
The students who take the exam are the best in the country which includes engineers from IITs,industry professionals
Even if you get a call then there's GD
Then there's an interview which is a tough nut to crack

Hello, its difficult to actually say which is the toughest exam, exams may be written exam or interviews.

I think civil services are the toughest written exam and SSB interviews are the toughest king of interviews in India.

with due respect to others opinion above,most of them have no idea regarding IES exams,I suppose.for IAS any degree holder can apply,but for IES first the candidate has to undergo the grilling in BE/BTECH,only then he is able to apply for it.and for IAS atleast u have got a choice of subjects to appear in the main,but for IES he has to read all his engineering subjects along with maths, general aptitude and grammers in english

Hi, There is nothing like tough exam. It is all based on your preparation. If you prepare Well whatever is asked in the paper you will be able solve it easily . But if you didn't prepare well means even though they are simple question you won't be able to answer. Based on the words of those who write CAT,GATE Are tough paper

I think CA final is definetly the toughest exam in India.

for students of engineering- IIT-JEE & SCRA is the toughest one.
for student of medical- AIIMS

but in the exam of CAT, the amount of syllabus it covers is just huge and the questions are not just simple to solve,you require lots of hard work and practice to clear it , SO CAT is the toughest one.

It can not said in that sense , but it can said as toughest exams are CSE,CAT,IIT JEE all are one of the toughest exam at their level.
