Being an engineer in Information Technology, you are definitely eligible to join Merchant Navy in the engineering department as well as in the navigation department. In order to be considered eligible for the engineering department, you will have undergo a pre-sea course for a period a 1 year offered by various institutes including Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Mumbai.
To join the Navigation Department as an Deck Cadet, you will have to go through a pre-sea training and the duration will be 6 months, offered by T.S.Chanakya, Navi Mumbai.
While pursuing any of the pre-sea course, make sure that that the institutes you select are approved by the Directorate General of Shipping.
Both Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Mumbai and T.S.Chanakya, Navi Mumbai, are approved by the same.
