Your decision to become an IAS officer is really appreciable. Now, In brief, I want to explain you about the pattern of civil service exam. It is divided into three stages ->CSAT ->Mains ->Personal Interview. For CSAT, The syllabus is same for all the applicants. After getting qualified in CSAT you have to apply for Civil Service(mains) exam which is the next level. In mains exam you will be given a choice to select two optional subjects from the pre-defined list of optional subjects along with other compulsory subjects. Here is the list of Optional subjects do have a look into it, >>Agriculture >>Management >>Animal Husbandry & Vetinary Science >>Mathematics >>Anthropology >>Mechanical Engineering >>Botany >>Medical Science >>Chemistry >>Philosophy >>Civil Engineering >>Physics >>Commerce & Accountancy >>Political Science & International Relations >>Economics >>Psychology >>Electrical Engineering >>Public Administration >>Geography >>Sociology >>Geology >>Statistics >>Indian History >>Zoology >>Law The selection for these optional subjects can be done in two ways. ->you can select a subject with respect to your educational background. ->you can select any subject which is not at all related to your educational background also. There is no compulsion to select a particular subject by you if you are from a particular background for ex :- Commerce student can select engineering optional. As you're pursuing electrical engineering 3rd year you can plan to take electrical engineering as optional subject. and it is really a nice idea to start preparation from this stage. for this you should be perfect in your core subjects of electrical stream. for an example you should be perfect in subjects like ->BEE(Basic Electrical Engineering). ->NA(Network analysis) ->AC, DC Machines etc. etc., In this way every core subject topic can be asked in the electrical engineering paper of IAS mains exam. More or less you should prepare like for GATE An advantage if you select Electrical engineering as optional subject is you will have added advantage. As you will be with this subjects for four years you can save a lot of time for other subjects of Mains exam. A short time should be sufficient for the preparation. Before all these things to happen The present target for you is to successfully complete your B.Tech(EEE) and to prepare for CSAT and clear that too. All the very best Regards |

Re: Should I take EEE as optional for IAS mains exam while in 3rd year electrical?
Dear pal,
it is not compulsory that you should take it as a optional subject but if you choose it then you can prepare easily for one of the papers. The selection procedure for the exam includes common aptitude exam followed by main exam and personnel interview. The aptitude exam is common for all and so you need to prepare for it . But out of 9 papers in the main exam there are 5 optional papers that you can choose as per your wish. But you can choose only one engineering paper. But it is not compulsory for you to choose. The other optional papers available are botany, zoology, chemistry , physics, commerce, economics, statistics, animal husbandasy, etc and around twenty five papers are there for you to choose and you can choose as per your wish. Nothing wrong in choosing papers which you have not learnt before but you need to put more efforts for preparation. To have ideas about questions refer previous years question papers |

There are more than 25 optional subjects, which include Arts, Management and Engineering. Since you are already pursuing Electrical Engg, you should be quite comfortable in handling the questions related to Elec Engg. You can have a view of the syllabus from the last year's notification from Employment News or UPSC website. Electrical Engg paper contains Electrical, Electronics and Communication parts. There is no optional subject like EEE. For the second optional, you may consider any other subject which may be easy to you. If you are strong in History, go for it All the best. |

Re: Should I take EEE as optional for IAS mains exam while in 3rd year electrical?
dear friend,
Civil Services Examination is the most prestigious examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to various All India Services including I.A.S., I.P.S., I.F.S., I.R.S., and various Group A Services and Group B Services. Normally applications are invited by UPSC notifications in leading News Papers during December every year. The Civil Services Examination consists of three stages : 1. Civil Services Preliminary Examination ( Objective Type) (Usually conducted in May) 2. Civil Services Main Examination (Written) (Conducted during October/November) 3. Interview and final Selection (During April/May) 1. Minimum Educational Qualification : Degree of any recognized university. However candidates studying in final year examination may apply for Preliminary. When he applies for Main Examination, he shall be a Graduate. But the following Engineering discipline are eligible :- * Civil Engineering, * Mechanical Engineering, * Bio Technology, * Electrical Engineering, * Physics * Chemistry * Statics * Geology etc. So you are very much eligible for I.F.S. in U.P.S.C. For this you have to prepare right now. Here I have also mentioned about the age limit and number of attempts of the examination. 2. Age Limit : * Minimum Age :- 21 as on 1st August during which they will write Exam. * Maximum Age: 30 for GEN, 33 for OBC and 35 for SC. 3. Number of attempts : * General Candidates -> 4 * OBC -> 7 * SC/ST -> No Limit all the best. |
