Both exams are the same but subject are different.
For PhD Mathematics , candidates who have done post graduate degree from a recognised university can study PhD Mathematics.

There is no age restriction.

Yes, it is compulsory if you want to be an Assistant Professor / Lecturer across India. According to UGC rules, only UGC NET / CSIR NET / ICAR NET exams are the gateway to become an assistant professor

Some of the popular PhD entrance exam are

The exam is conducted to shortlist candidates for the award of JRF or lecturership in Indian colleges and universities.

UGC NET entrance exam
It's the test for determining the eligibility for the post of JRF or Assistants professor award in Indian universities and college.

There are few private colleges that conduct their own entrance exam.

Purpose of conducting both exams ( CSIR NET or UGC NET) is the same, only difference in the subjects involved.
CSIR and UGC are 2 different governmental departments and both conduct their respective NET entrance exam.

Candidates who have a master's degree in science stream with minimum 55% and above from any recognised university are eligible for CSIR NET.
Candidate who have completed post graduation in the relevant subjects with at least 50% marks from any recognised University are eligible for UGC NET.
So, if you want to do Ph.D program in Mathematics, you will have to appear for CSIR NET.

To pursue PhD in Mathematics or Chemistry, you need to appear in CSIR NET as UGC NET
is not held for subjects like Mathematics and Chemistry.

Further, you can also appear in GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) held in these papers as many top institutes like IITs, NITs, etc. offer PHD admission in these subjects on the basis of GATE score also.

You can appear in any one entrance examination CSIR or UGC NET to get admission in PhD in Mathematics. CSIR is a national-level examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research to shortlist candidates for the award of a Junior Research Fellowship or lectureship in Indian universities and colleges.

UGC NET is also known as National Eligibility Test (NET) or NTA UGC NET. It is the test for the post of Junior Research Fellowship or Assistant Professor. You can apply for any one of them for PhD course.
