NIOS stands for National Institute of Open Schooling and it is a recognised board which is affiliated with Ministry of HRD.

Candidates with required qualification and physical fitness are eligible for recruitment in Merchant Navy.

So, no doubt you can apply for Merchant Navy after 10th from NIOS.

In order to join Merchant Navy, first of all, you must have to complete your class 12th examination from Science stream studying PCM as a subject combination.
After the completion of class 12th, you must have to complete either 3 years Bachelors degree in Nautical Science to join Merchant navy as a deck Officer or else you can complete your 4 years B.Tech in Marine Engineering and can join as an Engineer in the same.

You need to study PCM stream in class 11th to become eligible for merchant navy. There are lower level jobs like deck cadet, for which you just need a class 12th qualification.

Selection will be on the basis of written exam and physical fitness test. You need excellent eyesight and must be medically fit to become eligible for this field. There will be pre sea training too before joining.
