Kavi Samrat Upendra Bhanja College was previously called as Bhanjanagar College and it was established in the year 1960. The college was given its present name in honor of the great poet Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja to keep his ideologies alive. The college got affiliation from Utkal University to offer degrees under the faculty of arts in the year 1960 and under the faculty of science in the year 1963. Later in the year 1967, the college came under the jurisdiction of Berhampur University after its establishment.

National Cadet Corps in K.S.M.U Bhanja College:

The college is enrolling students to the National Cadet Corps functioning in its campus, enrolment is done during the month of July every year, and it is open to all students doing their degree courses in the college. Even students doing their higher secondary second year with exceptional talent are enrolled to NCC if they are found to be physically fit by a medical officer.
