Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology was formed in the year 1962 on the 24th of August through State Legislative Assembly Act of the Government of Orissa. Under the United States Agency for International Development Programme, this university developed links with the University of Mississippi and Missouri, which is a Grant University belonging to the United States of America. This link was made by the university for the purpose of strengthening its extension, research and teaching programmes.

Presently, ten constituent colleges are working along with the university and it has separate wings for monitoring & evaluation, extension education & planning and research. The university is situated at the heart of the state capital city of Bhubaneswar. The university has four academic campuses around the state of Orissa, each at Bhawanipatna, Rangeilunda Berhampur, and Chiplima Sambalpur and Bhubaneswar. Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology has strengthened its extension and research base by forming 13 adaptive research stations, 7 commodity research stations, 4 zonal sub-stations and 8 zonal research stations in addition to 48 All India Co-ordinated Research Projects. Above all more than 40 National Agricultural Technology Projects are being carried out by the university. Furthermore, a number of other projects are also carried out by the university by the funds raised from external agencies.

Apart from regular courses, the university is also offering education through Directorate of Extension Education as well. This extension education centre disseminates knowledge and refines technologies to the community of farmers through a network spread over the whole state of Orissa.
