Tamil Nadu Teacher Education University was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu as an exclusive University for teacher education courses with a view to promote excellence in the field of teacher education. The Government of Tamil Nadu established this university with a view to spread higher, secondary and elementary education and training of teachers involved in offering education at these school education levels. This university came into existence in the year 2008 and all the B. Ed and teacher education colleges located in the state of Tamil Nadu are affiliated to this university. At present, more than 650 colleges, offering courses exclusively for teacher education in this state are affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Teacher Education University.

For seeking admission to the Bachelor of Education course offered by the University, candidates must have completed their UG degree under 10+2+3 stream or under 11+1+3 stream of education. Different specializations are offered by the university for the B. Ed students and for some of the specializations like Indian culture, philosophy, psychology, sociology, political science, home science, commerce and economics alone candidates must be PG degree holders. For other specializations, candidates under OC category, BC Category, MBC/DNC category and SC category must have secured 40%, 43%, 45% and 50% of marks respectively at their UG Level. Tamil Nadu Teacher Education University awards Ph. D degrees to candidates who have submitted their thesis based on independent and original research work in education or involving education that is approved by the Board of Examiners. For seeking admission to the Ph. D course in Education, candidates must have completed their Master of Education with 55% of marks (50% for SC/ST and PH Candidates) from the same university or for any other university approved by the Syndicate of this university.
