The university commonly known as SKUAST Kashmir is situated in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir with the campus of the university in the place called Shalimar. This is the university’s main campus and apart from these the university has various other campuses which extend from various regions in Kashmir valley to the Ladakh regions.

The university was named by Sheikh Md. Abdullah and was established in the year 1982 as the act form the L.A. or the state legislative assembly was passed. The university was separated from the SKUAST Jammu in the year 1998-99 as there were some amendments in the act of SKUAST 1982. The university council includes Chancellors, Vice chancellors, Pro chancellors, Agriculture Ministers, ICAR nominees, and Agriculture Production Commissioners.

The various courses offered at the university include both graduate and under graduate courses i.e. B. Sc. in Agriculture, Forestry, Sericulture and B. Tech in agriculture engineering.  The Post graduate courses include the M.Sc. Agriculture, Forestry, Environment Sciences, sericulture etc. Apart from these there are PhD Programmes in Agriculture, Sericulture and veterinary sciences.

The SKUAST offers a central library since it has many campuses located in the entire range of Kashmir and Ladakh. It has a large number of books which supports all the courses which the university offers. It also has more than 20000 journals, and CDs. More books as they are introduced, being added every year.

The admissions of the students in various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are done according to the university norms that are modified and amended from time to time. The students are required to fill in a application form which can be either downloaded from the website or can be obtained directly from the university campus. The payment for the admission form is Rs. 2200/-. There are reservation quotas which gives admissions as per the rules for different categories.
