Tata Institute of Social Sciences was founded as a premier social science institute which was established in the year 1936. The institute was founded by Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. It was the first school of social work in the country. The university was given the title of a Deemed university by the University Grants Commission of India in the year 1964. Initially the institute was established as Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social work but later it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.
