This Law University in the state of Tamil Nadu was formed in the year 1997 on the 20th of September and it was launched by the former Indian President, Dr. K.R. Narayanan. The university was formed by an Act of the State Legislature of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Even though, it was launched on 20th of September, its functions began from the 3rd of October 1997.

The university was mainly formed with the objective of providing for the dissemination and advancement of knowledge of law and to motivate legal education. The university also aims to inculcate a sense of responsibility among the students to serve the nation in the field of law by developing skills with respect to law reforms, legislation, legal services and advocacy. The Central Law College, Yercaud Road, Salem

Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University offers a number of specializations both at under-graduation and post-graduation level of law education. The university was given its name in honor of the most popular legal specialist of India, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.

The university was set up with National Law School of India University as model. The university has a difference when compared with the other law schools in the country since it has both government owned and private law colleges under its jurisdiction. At the post-graduation level law courses, the university is offering advanced degrees through its law departments and some of these degree courses include criminal justice administration, criminal law, legal order & environmental law, international law and organizations, intellectual property law, constitutional law and human rights, etc…
