Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) was set up for detection, prosecution and to offer recommendation for prosecution of white-collar frauds/crimes. The organization uses experts in the field of company law, capital market, accountancy, forensic auditing, law, information technology, investigation, and taxation for performing its duties.

The functions of SFIO involve investigation of cases that are having multi-disciplinary and inter-departmental ramifications, which are complex. They should also ensure that the case has substantial involvement of public interest by monitoring the size, either in terms of affected people or in monetary terms.

The SFIO also investigates serious cases of fraud received from Department of company Affairs. The primary functions of Assistant Director is to function as a member of investigating team for examination of the investigation cases related to relevant field.
