Kollam District was previously called as Quilon District and it is one of the fourteen districts in the state of Kerala. The state of Kerala is called as God’s own country and particularly Kollam district is acting as a representative of all the natural attributes of the state and it is endowed with a major sea post on the Arabian Sea inland and long coastal region. The district acts as the capital of cashew processing and trading industry in the state and the topography of the district constitute, rivers, farm lands, forests, backwaters, lagoons, lakes, mountains and plains.

According to the census taken in the year 2001, the district had a literacy rate of 91.18%, which includes female literacy rate of 88.18% and male literacy rate of 94.43%. This rate is far greater than the national average rate of literacy and is consistent with the state average literacy rate. Engineering College:

College of Engineering, Perumon, Kollam District is working under the Co-operative Academy of Professional Education of the Government of Kerala and the college came into existence in the year 2000. The college has earned necessary recognition from the government of Kerala and the Cochin University of Science and Technology to offer B. Tech courses in four branches of engineering. The branches offered by the college are:

Electrical & Electronics Engineering

Electronics & Communication Engineering

Information Technology

Computer Science & Engineering

Admission to these course are done through central counseling by the Government of Kerala and admission is made based on the Common Entrance Examination to professional courses conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance Examination of the state.

Arts, Science & Commerce College:

Government College, Chavara is actually called as Baby John Memorial Government College and the college came into existence in the year 1981 on the 26th of August. The college offers Bachelor of Arts, Science and Commerce courses with affiliation from the Kerala University located in Thiruvananthapuram. The Arts course is offered by the college with History as the main subjects and politics and economics as subsidiary subjects. Bachelor of Commerce is offered with EDP and Computer Applications and Bachelor of Science course is offered with mathematics as main subject and physics and statistics as subsidiary subjects.

Polytechnic Colleges:

The district of Kollam has two government-run polytechnic colleges namely Government Polytechnic College, Punalur and Government Polytechnic College, Ezhukone. The courses offered by the Punalur College are Diploma in computer applications & business management, computer engineering and electronic engineering. This college is approved with an intake capacity of 40 students per year for the computer applications & business management course, while for the other two courses the intake capacity is 60 students per year. On the other hand, courses offered by the government polytechnic at Ezhukone include Diploma in computer hardware maintenance, electronics & communication and mechanical engineering. This college is permitted to admit 40 students per year for these three courses.
