Anaesthesia, which is also written as Anesthesia is a term derived from the Greek work, which means without sensation. Anaesthesia is applied on patients during surgery to either as general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia during surgery or any other procedure that might cause pain. When anaesthesia is applied on the whole body, it is called as general anaesthesia and when it is applied on any particular region or area of the body, it is called as local anaesthesia.
Irrespective of whether it is local or general anaesthesia, the procedure involves giving particular drugs that interfere with the transmission of nervous impulses for reducing sensation. Anaesthetic is a term used to denote all drugs used for carrying out anaesthesia in patients and the term is also used for describing the entire process of anaesthesia. Ph. Eligibility for seeking admission to Ph. D in Anesthesia in AIIMS:
For seeking admission to the Ph. D course in Anesthesia, candidates must possess any of the following qualifications:
• A degree of Master of Science or Master’s degree in any subjects allied to bio medical sciences or PG degree in Nursing with not less than 60% or Doctor of Medicine or Master of Surgery or its equivalent degree or diploma of the National Board of Examination in the discipline of Anaesthesia
• MBBS with not less than 55% of aggregate marks
Course Duration:
The duration of Ph. D in Anesthesia shall be the time period from registration to submission of thesis. The minimum period of registration with respect to candidates registered for Ph. D shall be three years and maximum period is five years.
Method of Selection:
Selection of candidates to the Ph. D course in AIIMS is made through two-stage performance evaluation as given below:
• Written test for a duration of 90 minutes carrying 80 marks in the subject of Anesthesia. The question papers will have theory based MCQs and 30 lab/practical/clinical based short answer questions. Each correct MCQs will carry one mark and each wrong answer will have 1/3rd of mark as negative mark. The result of this first stage examination will be published in the notice board of the institution
• Candidates with more than 50% of marks will be called for departmental lab/practical/clinical based assessment carrying 20 marks. The number of candidates to be called for the second stage of selection process will be decided based on the ratio of 3 times the number of seats advertised and candidates will higher percentage of marks will be given first preference.
• Admission of students to the Ph. D course will be subject to the availability of fellowship/funds from recognized funding agencies. The admission will be finalized and offer letter will be sent to the selected candidates only on production of evidence of availability of research fellowship/grant/funds from the project is submitted by the candidate through the department head of Anesthesia
