Applied geography deals with environmental management, cartography, GIS, Location analysis, applied physical geography, transportation systems planning and land management. Applied geography deals with the solution of real world issues such as social, economic and environmental with the application of geographical knowledge and skills.

Applications of applied Geography

Applied geographers are basically involved in understanding the cases of natural phenomena such as landslides, flooding, acid precipitation and coastal erosion. Important issues of environmental change and management are also give focus for geographical research. In this case we see that there are many issues like quantity and quality of water supply, desertification and deforestation. Apart from this, there are issues of land use like agricultural de-intensification, vacant land and wetland conservation. Applied geographers have in recent times turned their attention to a series of problems in social, economic and environmental areas which confront the urban and rural populations of both developing and developed economies. There are issues like housing, transport, ill health, poverty, crime, socio-spatial segregation and discrimination. These are the topics of intense debate, while other topics are for example boundary disputes.

Applied geographical analysis is important for the topic of spatial analysis, where the range of problems lies from computer mapping of disease incidence to simulation of the processes of change in human and physical environments.

The range of research undertaken by applied geographers is impressive. Applied geographers have made some very important contributions to the resolution of real world problems both in terms of social policy formulation as well as the physical environment.

The reason of the failure of applied geography to make a serious impact on social policy is in no terms an indication of the failure of applied geography in the significant improvement in human well being. Instead of thinking and drawing conclusions on the fact that there has been a limited impact of applied geographical research in the field of social policy, they can draw encouragement from the fact that geographers have not compromised on the type of research and its conclusions.

Applied geography is based on that particular philosophy of relevance of social usefulness. It focuses on the resolution of real world issues of social, economic and environmental problems. We also see that applied geographers are active across the human-physical geography divisions.

The immense range of applied research in geography shows us the fact that applied geography is making an all out effort to solve the various social, economic and environmental problems at a variety of geographic scales. It shows us the way of addressing the continuing hardships faced by humankind. Applied geography tells us the relationship between people and their environments. Applied geography has many principles and it has the potential to solve a wide range of real world problems.
