Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) actually came into existence in the early 1970. The interactive programme on the experimental studies in plasma physics towards understanding space plasma phenomena was established at the Physical Research Laboratory which leads to the establishment of Institute of Plasma Research. The re-orientation to the fusion-relevant experiments was completed in the year 1978.
