Group study is one of the best ways of preparation. Divide sections/topics between you and your partner and have a brief session on topic from your friend before you actually start topic. This will save your time and efforts and will improve your and your partner’s understanding on the topic.
Normally coaching GATE is not required but if you are not able to concentrate much then this is a good option.

there is no need of confusion at all
if you are final year student just go through the text books you have studied till now and practice different model papers if you got any doubt then refer that topic.
if you are not a final year student you have so much time first choose one best author do not confuse and wast your time because something is far better than nothing.
and refer standard authors for example do not study books like bakshi non standard books
and practice model papers as many as possible
