Re: Diploma courses in pediatrics/gynecology
Theoretically, you can get any degree, as long as you fulfill the medical school entrance requirements. Typically that is a year of biology, a year of chemistry, a year of organic chemistry, a year of physics, a year of calculus and at least a semester of English. By the time you take all of these, you are well on your way to a science degree, so that partially explains why most medical students have degrees in biology (or related areas like microbiology, biochemistry, etc.) or chemistry. A few majored in physics, engineering, or computer science.
I know pediatricians who majored in English, psychology, music, philosophy, business, etc. but rarely did they go right from college to medical school. They often took a 5th year to get all those science courses or did a master’s degree. It seemed to me that the science majors had a somewhat easier time the first two years of medical school, but once you have that done, every one is pretty even in terms of the background needed to complete medical school and go on to a residency in pediatrics or anything else. Medical school admission is very competitive, so one must get excellent grades. That would be another factor in choosing a major - pick something that you really like so all the studying to get good grades will be tolerable. Likewise, the MCAT exam is heavy on science, so don’t bother taking it until you have taken all of the science requirements. Good luck. |
