But generally all universities in U.S trust GRE score so as to assess the competency of the candidate to adapt to the language skills required along with basic mathematics skills

First of all make a list of the universities that you aspire for, then send mails regarding their criteria for selecting PhD students.

Generally an alternative to GRE is TOEFL but that also depends on the university ( departmental) norms

dear frnd,if you want to do engineering courses then GRE is must.but for subjects other than this you have to appear exams like SAT,TOEFEL...etc
you can also try for scholarship scheme for differet universities...

don't waste your time but start your preparation from now.
about your option i think it will be better that the subject in which you are good & have interest.you can go for it

Yes,A gre is essential for phd in the states.The student may not require a hard core postgraduate degree as long as there is 16-yrs-of-education!A high Gre score (atleast 1300) is important!A TOEFLE of 100 (score)is generally asked by universities.However,In case you are baffled with how to go about getting THAT TERRIFIC SCORE,dont worry!!!,my distant brother cleared GRE with some Chopras,located somewhere in delhi,umm,nehru place i guess.
Why dont you look them up on the net?

You can write for either GRE /TOEFL for admission in various universities in US
you must join a good coaching institute for prepartion as they will provide you all the prepartion material and also full detail regarding application criteria in various universities
