Is NET examination mandatory to do PhD or M.Phil?

I passed out my Post Graduation in Physics and now I want to do M.Phil or PhD without appearing for NET exam. Can I do so? Or, NET score is compulsory? And, what would be job opportunities after M.Phil or PhD?

No, it is not mandatory in many universities as they conduct their own research / PhD entrance exam followed by interview or counselling. And if you are NET qualified then you will be exempted from the entrance exam.
However, top institutes prefer candidates with NET / SET certificate.
Do you have any question? or have anything to say?
