You do the basic work of nursing staff. You wash down and make beds. You wash patients, either in their beds or in the bathroom. You get bedpans and urine bottles and the take them to the sluice to be disposed of. You get urine and stool samples. You walk patients to the toilet and back to their bed. You feed patients who are unable to feed themselves. You answer call bells. You take basic observations.

By doing all of this, you are learning how to connect with your patients. You are learning about patient needs and how to identify which patients need to have a bedbath, who can’t walk to the bathroom by themselves, who needs help in the shower. When you are washing a patient in bed, you talk to them. You can learn a lot about them that might not be in their notes when you are being intimate with them.

It’s the first time that you are caring for a group of people and you’ll learn a lot about yourself.
