The full form of NIOS is National Institute of Open Schooling. NIOS is a central government recognized board.

1. For admission in tenth board of NIOS, a candidate must have passed ninth standard from a recognized board.

You must pass all subjects of ninth standard to become eligible for NIOS board exams.

Yes you can take admission based on your 8th grade mark sheet, only requirement is that you are 14 years of age before applying for NIOS. In fact you can even join NIOS with a 7th std pass certificate.
All you will need is a mark sheet, school leaving certificate and address proof as the text books are sent home. In fact you can drop Math and Science and need to pass in only 5 subjects to clear 10th via NIOS.
Take subjects that interest you and do visit the NIOS website and register for admissions. Once you register your books will take some time to reach so you can read the study material online at the website. The admission procedure is fully online, in case you can not follow go to the local NIOS centre and ask for free guidance.
The fee is Rs 2135 for 6 subjects which includes the cost of books.
Do check the website at this address https://nios.ac.in
