First of all I want to tell you that "Impossible is nothing", in regard of your question it is obvious.
Most of the top ranker in GATE have achieved their ranks just by self-study
however if you could have a relevant good book it may prove helpfull.

HI....yes it is possible to clear GATE without taking coaching from any institute.I know many students who got a good score without taking help from others.Just go through the entire syllabus of GATE.Yes there are many websites offer some but not sufficient GATE materials for free of cost.Some the links are:

its quite possible to get into any competitive exams by self study and i think its the best possible way to explore your talents. in my knowledge most of the candidates get good ranks just by self study only.so nothing's to worry about. just use your past experiences and pull yourself together and what have you studied so far at your undergraduate level. recall everything and get the basics cleared as much as possible. you can get gate books at any book store.

Well of course you can go through the GATE examination through self study.But according to me you must prefer studying books rather than preparing online.

Its better that you first download your GATE syllabus of your respective branch and then go for studying books or Pearson Publications,Tata-Mcgraw hill,R.K Bansal and other such books.I could have given you further information if you would have specified your branch.

Its even better that you go through the old question papers.

in mine opinion its a very tough task to clear out the gate exam without coaching its a time waisting.if u cant join a coaching u must hhave a tutor to teach u of syllabus of gate becuase there are numerous things in gate syllabus which u cant handled of it own.
