Is post graduation in economics compulsory for giving IES exam?


Is post graduation in economics compulsory for giving IES exam? What would be the required qualification asked for the IES exam? Can you please guide me with the complete information on the same? Hoping to get the information soon as possible. Thank you!

Yes. Post Graduation in either Economics/Applied Economics/Business economics/Econometrics is absolutely necessary to be eligible for IES (Indian Economic Service) Exam.

Apart from educational qualification you should also satisfy minimum age requirements.

Age Criterion: To apply for IES exam your age should be minimum 21 and maximum 30, however relaxation is applicable to certain categories such as SC/ST/PD etc., That will be known once notification is posted for the exam.

Notification for this year is expected in the month of June. If you satisfy all the conditions of educational qualifications and Age criterion. Then you may apply for the exam, which will be held in the month of November.

You will be provisionally eligible for writing IES exam even you are final year PG student and appearing in respective final exams, but you should be able to submit the documents whenever asked during further rounds of selection like Personal Interview.

The scheme of IES examination is as follows:-

Subjects viz. General English, General Studies, General Economics (Divided into four papers (I,II, III) and GE)

General English & General Studies carries 100 marks each.
All General Economics Papers(Four in total) carries 200 marks each.

Minimum eligibility to apply for UPSC IES - Indian Economic Services 2015 :

A candidate must have passed Master's or Post Graduate Degree in any one of the following subjects from a recognized university :

Economics/ Business Economics/ Applied Economics/ Econometrics

Age of the candidate should not be less than 21 years and more than 30 years and relaxation in upper age as per rules of the government which is 03 years for OBCs and 05 years for SC/ST category candidates.

Examination Pattern of Indian Economic Services :

>> General English - 100 marks
>> General Studies - 100 marks
>> General Economics I - 200 marks
>> General Economics II - 200 marks
>> General Economics III - 200 marks
>> General Economics - 200 marks

Total 06 papers for 100 marks and qualifying in each paper is compulsory to be eligible for interview process/ personality test so that you have to work more on every single subject asked.

First of all you need to focus on your basics that you learned in master's degree and bachelor's degree of economics because one paper will be based on your study and other papers will be based on vast knowledge of economics collected by you from your degree studies and other sources means how much you practiced and had practical knowledge so work good and get qualified.

Coaching institutions are good in such preparations and there are few good coaching institutes which offers good coaching facility with higher learning please read below :

So you need to confirm whether you are eligible or not and if you serious to crack the exam then you must take help from coaching experts and get guided to crack the exam.

Those candidates who have completed Post graduate degree in Economics/Applied Economics/Business Economics/Econometrics course from a recognized University are eligible for Indian Economics Service exam.

Your age should be in between 21 to 30 years. Age relaxation is provided for reserved category candidates.

Pattern for Indian Economics Service exam:-

(a)General English :- 100 Marks
(b)General Studies :- 100 Marks
(c)General Economics-I :- 200 Marks
(d)General Economics-II :- 200 Marks
(e)General Economics-III :- 200 Marks
(f)General Economics :- 200 Marks

IES stands for the Indian Economic Services. It is conducted jointly with Indian Statistical services by the Union Public Service Commission.

Eligibility criteria:

The minimum academic qualification required to appear for IES entrance exam is master's degree in economics or business economics or applied economics or econometrics.

Those candidates who are waiting for final results or in final year of master's degree can also apply for the IES exam.

So, yes master's degree in economics is compulsory for giving Indian Economic Services exam.

The age limit is 21-30 years for general category candidates and upper age relaxed for reserved categories.

Candidates who have completed or are in the final year of Post
graduate degree in Economics/Applied Economics/
Business Economics/Econometrics are eligible for Indian Economic Services.
Age limit allowed is 21-30 years for general candidates with +3 &+5 year relaxation for OBC & SC/ST respectively.
The exam is conducted in 2phases- written and interview.
Written exam is of 1000 marks with 6papers.English and General studies of 100 each and 4 papers on Economics 200 each.
Interview is of 200marks.
You can check previous year papers and notification on next upcoming exam on the website of UPSC at www.upsc.gov.in

No dear, Post Graduation in Economics is not very much compulsory for writing IES exam, you can write the IES exam even though you are enrolled in the Bachelor's degree program. But, yes Computer science and Mechanical student are not allowed to write IES exam and rest are allowed for the IES.
