Civil services are the most prestigious government services in India. The civil servants have a say in the administration of the country. To become a civil servant, one has to sit for the Civil Services Examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. The exam is conducted in two phases, the first phase is preliminary exam and the next is main examination. Students can take up mechanical science as their optional subject. The preliminary exam is objective type and the main exam is subjective type. The syllabus of the exam is of degree level. Inclusion of this subject in the civil services examination is an added advantage for mechanical engineers. However, the standard of the questions is pretty high.
