Civil Services Examination is conducted in two stages. The first stage is a preliminary examination followed by Main Examination. Students can choose the optional subject as per their will. Mechanical engineering is one of them. In the prelims, it has only one paper and in the main exam the subject has two papers. The pattern foe the examination is given below.

In the preliminary examination, the paper of mechanical engineering has all multiple choice type questions. Every question has four alternative answers. Students have to mark their answer in the OMR sheet. The duration of the exam is 2 hours and the total marks are 300. Negative marking of one third is there in the exam. Multiple answers are also treated as wrong answer.

In the main examination we give the pattern of the second paper. The duration of the exam is three hours. There are eight questions in the paper, out of which five are to be answered. Each question is of 60 marks. So the total marks are 300. The paper is divided in two sections. Question number 1 and 5 are compulsory. Any three can be answered, but at least one question is taken from each of the sections. The questions have smaller parts, so the 60 marks are distributed. The first question can be expected of being about writing notes.
