Specialist Officer post is better than probationary officer simply because it is related to your field of study. Hence, if you have done B.Tech or any other specialized Degree in subjects like Agriculture or any other subject, then specialist officer post offers you to use your technical expertise in a banking job.

Probationary Officer may be good in terms of salary but you will not use your technical knowledge that you have acquired during your Engineering or some other Graduation. Hence, it is upto you to select one of them, if you are getting both at same time.

The PO and Specialist officer exam is conducted by IBPS and SBI for various public sector banks in India. You must have Graduation in any discipline for PO and Graduation in specialized subjects for Specialist officer post.

There will be written exam and interview for preparing the merit list for selection. You have to pass in both written exam and interview, then only you will be eligible for selection. Those who get top marks will get selected first.
