Jai Prakash University shortly called as J.P. University and it is one of the premier universities in the state of Bihar, which was formed in the year 1990. The university is serving the quality and higher education requirements of the people of Saran Commissionary.

The university is offering under graduation and post graduation courses under almost all the branches of education. The university has 21 constituent colleges, 10 affiliated colleges under its jurisdiction, and these constituent colleges were previously under the jurisdiction of Bihar University. All the colleges coming under this university are registered under University Grants Commission Act.

More than 16 post-graduate departments are functioning under the university and these departments have proved their excellence in offering quality education and in providing opportunities for the students in carrying out research activities. For developing the campus at Chapra town, a land extending an area of 242 acres was acquired and the campus was developed based on the plan prepared by globally acclaimed town planners. An amount of Rs. 2 Crores was sanctioned by the government towards the development of the campus.

The university is offering education through four of its faculties namely social science, humanities, commerce and science. In addition to regular courses, the university is also offering education through distance learning programme. In addition to educational departments, cultural and sports councils are also functioning under the university to encourage to students to take part in extra-curricular activities.
