University of Jammu was established in the year 1969 under the Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act after division of the former university of Jammu and Kashmir. The university was awarded ‘A Grade’ by NAAC and it offers teaching in those branches of education as it deems fit. The university is situated at a small hill at the bottom of Trikuta at a height of 1030 feet.

The university is not considering imparting of education as a duty, but it is considering the same as a commitment toward upliftment of the society. The campus of the university is technologically developed with state-of-art tools. It conducts examinations, offers degree and confers academic distinctions on students pursuing approved courses in the affiliated colleges. University of Jammu has three campuses in total. The main campus is at Jammu Tawi and other two campuses are in south and north of Jammu. The south campus is located at Kathua, while the north campus is located at Bhaderwah. The main campus is spread over an area of 118.7 acres and in the same location another old campus with an area of 10.5 acres is also functioning. But, the old campus is used only for residential accommodation of staff and boys’ hostel is also located here. Jammu campus, which is the main campus, includes teaching departments and several facilities like STD/ISD, photocopying, canteens, auditoriums and a central library. The campus also includes a guest house and sports complex for playing different games. The other two campuses at Bhaderwah and Kathua were started recently only in the year 2006.
