Tamil Nadu Agricultural University came into existence in the year 1971. Even though, the university is known to have been established in the year 1971, the history of the university shows that it came into existence in the year 1868 itself with the establishment of Agricultural School at Chennai, which was later shifted to the city of Coimbatore in the year 1906.
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is offering 29 PG courses and 12 UG courses through its constituent colleges. The university is offering science and technology courses in different branches of agriculture at the UG and PG level and the list of courses offered is given below:

The directorate of open and distance learning of the TNAU came into existence with the objective of offering several PG Diploma, degree and certificate courses for people who are interested in taking up self-employment courses in agriculture.
The university as a part of its activities pertaining to overseas education has introduced two dual-degree courses, in which the students will be undertaking teaching at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Canada at the UG level for three semesters and the remaining six semesters at the PG level in the campus of TNAU. In this programme, students will be awarded with two degrees namely Bachelor of Technology in Environmental horticulture from TNAU and from NSAC.
