Vivekananda College began to function from the year 1971 and the college is intended for men candidates only. In the first two academic years, the college began to offer only pre-university courses and degree courses were started in the year 1973. The college is offering education in arts, commerce and science faculties with affiliation from Madurai Kamarajar University.

The library at Vivekananda College is offering several services like internet browsing service, CD-Rom Service, Reprographic service, internet library loan service, bibliographic service, reference service, current awareness service, display of new arrival service and circulation service. The library is also offering a service called self-study service with a view to improve the reading habit among students.
