Vijayanagara Institute of Medical Sciences shortly called as VIMS came into existence in the year 1997 and the institute offers medical education with affiliation from the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences located in Bangalore. The institute offers dentistry and medical courses and the medical courses are also offered at PG level with multiple specialties and super specialties. The institute acts as an autonomous body administered by the Governing council that is appointed by the Government of Karnataka.
