Veer Narmad South Gujarat University was previously known as South Gujarat University and it was formed in the year 1967. The university got its present name in the year 2004 in honor of the popular poet and scholar of the city of Narmad in Gujarat State. Among the different courses offered by the University, the standard of the MCA course offered by the university is popular among the students and the university has is holding the pride of being one among the top five MCA institutions in the state. The other post-graduate departments functioning under the university are aquatic-biology, comparative literature, rural studies and public administration. Initially, before the construction of own building for the university, it started to function from Sarvajanik College of education. The library is connected with Wi-Fi facility, online catalogue facility, broad-band internet access for the laptop of the students and above all the readers of all types of books can be benefitted from the library.  The health center in the university is working all round the clock for providing immediate medical attention to the students in the case of any emergency. The university is offering education under different streams through the 17 departments functioning in its campus. Even though, the university began to function from 1967 the central library and administrative office were moved to the present campus of the university only in the year 1976.
