Devi Ahilya University was formed in the year 1964 and it is also known as Indore University. It is one of the major universities in Indore in the state of Madhya Pradesh.  It was formed by an act of Madhya Pradesh State Legislative Assembly and its jurisdiction is limited to the district of Indore alone. In the year 1988, the name of the university was changed as Devi Ahilya University as against the previous name of Indore University and this name was given to the university in honor of Ms. Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar, who was the queen of the Kingdom of Malwa in India. Even though, the jurisdiction of the university was restricted to the district of Indore alone, later it was expanded to seven more districts in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Devi Ahilya University has two campuses, one of which is the administrative campus and the other being extension campus. The administrative campus is located in Rabindranath Tagore Marg in Indore, while the extension campus called as Takshashila Campus is located at Khandwa Road. It is a state government statutory institution and it is awarded with B grade status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. In addition to offering quality education, the university is also encouraging the students to take part in sports activities and as a symbol of this, the university is conducting inter-collegiate sports competition among the affiliated college. The teams/individual winning these competitions are taken to inter-university competitions.
