National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) came into existence on the 27th of December 1974 by bringing together Mental Hospital (formerly known as Lunatic Asylum) and All India Institute of Mental Health. NIMHANS became a Deemed University on November 14, 1994.

NIMHANS works under the control of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka.
