In the whole of North-eastern region of India, Assam Agricultural University was the first institution of its kind. The main aim of the university is to generate internationally competitive manpower in the sector of farming and to conduct research in both frontier and conventional areas for optimization of production and to disseminate the generated technologies for the growth of farmers and traders engaged in the sector.

In the early 20th century, formation of two research stations, one at Karimganj in the year 1913 and another at Titabor in the year 1923 paved the way for formation of the Assam Verterinary College at Nagaon and Agricultural College in Jorhat in the year 1948. After this, in the year 1969 on the first of April, the Assam Agricultral University was formed under the Assam Agricultural University Act 1968. The University is offering education under four faculties namely; faculty of fisheries science, home science, veterinary science and agriculture and the list of colleges affiliated to the university under each of these faculties are given below:

Faculty of Fisheries Science:

Faculty of Home Science:

• College of Home Science, Jorhat

Faculty of Veterinary Science:

• College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara

• Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science, Azad

Faculty of Agriculture:

• College of Agriculture, Jorhat

• Biswanath College of Agriculture, Biswanath Chariali

Vision of Assam Agricultural University is to provide quality human resource so as to enable technology enabled agricultural renaissance and rejuvenating & revitalizing post-green revolution in the agricultural field. The university’s mission is to ensure increase in productivity in fish-animal-horti-agri crops in spite of the increasing human population, diminishing water resources, ailing soil health and fragmented/shrinking land holdings of the farmers. In addition to the above-mentioned colleges, the university also has six regional agricultural research centers each at Karimganj, Gossaigaon, Diphu, Shillongoni, North Lakimpur and Titabar.
