KLE VK Institute of Dental Science came into existence in the year 1985 and it was established by the KLE Society. The institute is located within the sprawling campus spread over 113 acres of land in the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College campus. The institute earned approval from the Dental Council of India to offer BDS course with effect from the year 1989 and for the PG course in dental science consequently in the year 1990.

From the academic year 2006, the courses offered by the institute are affiliated to the KLE University and before the year 2006, it was affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences located in Bangalore. Eligibility requirement:

For getting into the four-year BDS course offered by the KLE VK Institute of Dental Sciences, candidates must have completed 17 years of age at the time of admission or by the end of the year in which the candidate is seeking admission. They should have completed PUC examination from the state board of Karnataka with biology, chemistry, physics and English subjects or any other equivalent qualification as approved by the KLE University.

For MDS course, candidates must have completed their BDS course from a recognized university. In the case of candidates, who have completed their BDS course from any other state other than Karnataka, they should get eligibility certificate from the KLE University to join the MDS course in any branches.

For seeking admission to the certificate courses offered by the institute, candidates must have completed their BDS/MDS course from an institution approved by the Dental Council of India.

For diploma courses, they must have completed their PUC or equivalent examination with not less than 40% of marks under science stream of education. The minimum marks required for SC/ST candidates is 35% of marks in the PUC Examination in science stream.
