Government Holkar College came into existence in the year 1981 on the 10th of June with a view to meet the educational requirements of the people of Indore. Initially, the college was working under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta until 1904 and then it came under the control of the University of Allahabad from 1926 to 1940. At present, the college is functioning with affiliation from the Devi Ahilya University located in Indore.

The state government of Madhya Pradesh awarded the college with the status of Model College in the year 1985-86 and it was conferred with autonomy status in the year 1988 by the Devi Ahilya University with the consent of the Government of Madhya Pradesh and the University Grants Commission. Later in the year 1994-95, the college was declared as a centre of excellence and then the institute introduced several employment-oriented courses.

Development of the college:

Right from its inception, Government Holkar College has gone through a phase of development and initially it was functioning from the building of the Maharaja Shivaji Rao school since it had no separate building. In the year 1894, the institution got its own building in the Navlakaha area located in a serene atmosphere. During the initial stages, the college offered courses on science, mathematics, political economy, history, logic, Persian, Sanskrit, and English literature. Then, during the sixties arts, commerce, science and law faculties were introduced by the college. Due to inability to accommodate large number students, the college was divided into two units in the year 1961. Therefore, the old building of the institution continued to be the building for its science faculty with quality research-work and teaching aids and new building was allocated for other courses.
