Fisheries College came into existence in the year 1977 at the city of Tuticorin as a constituent unit of the state of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University and later it was brought under the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University from the year 1989 on the 20th of September. In the year 1990, the institute was renamed as Fisheries College and Research Institute, with its primary mandate for offering graduates with the best education in fisheries science with a view to meet the requirements of fisheries sector.

Infrastructural facilities at the institute:
Fisheries College and Research Institute has two campuses namely main campus spread over an area of 24 ha and this campus is located at the Harbor Byd-bass road and another campus is called harbor complex, which is in the north beach road. In both these campuses, the institute has the best infrastructural facilities and the facilities are classified under three categories namely teaching facilities, research facilities and other facilities. Trainings offered by the institute:
Fisheries College and Research Institute has so far organizations about 170 off campus and on campus programmes in different trades of fisheries like preparation of value-added fisher products, hygienic handling of fish and fishery products, freshwater prawn farming, ornamental fish culture, etc… for helping out fish processors, entrepreneurs, fishermen and fish farmers. Among the 4500 people who got training from the institution, 300 of them have started their fishery trade activities pertaining aquaculture, product manufacture and fish processing.

Can i study the course of fishing technology in distance education?????
My sister study in 12 std maths biotechnology to join Fisheries course in Fisheries college and research institute at Tuticorin. When the application procedure starts.
