The Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education at Gwalior came into existence as Laskhmibai College of Physical Education in the year 1957. The institute was established by the Ministry of Education & Culture of the Indian Government and the institute began its journey as an institute affiliated to the Vikram University. Then, in the year 1964, it was brought under the affiliation of the Jiwaji University and in the year 1973, the institute was conferred with the status of Institute of National Importance thereby changing its name Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE). Again in the year 1982, in recognition of the unique character and status of the institute and for facilitating further growth, the institute was conferred with the status of an ‘Autonomous College of Jiwaji University’.

In further recognition of the unique educational services offered by the institute for the field of physical education, research and sport, the Indian government’s Ministry of Human Resource Development conferred the status of ‘Deemed to be University’ under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act 1956 on September 1995. The university holds the pride of being the first deemed to be university in the field of physical education in India and it enjoys a unique place of its kind in south Asia. In the year 2009, the institute was renamed as Lakshmibai National University of Physical Education (LNUPE). Right from the year 2000, the university was brought under the administrative control of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of Indian Government and it is fully funded by the ministry.
